With many looking for ways to feel and do better in the new year, our team is sharing quick tips each week in the month of January about how they plan to join MAYO’s commitment to clean energy by reducing their carbon footprint in 2022.
As many of us struggle to be more responsible consumers, we often find ourselves with more things than we know what to do with – especially after the holidays.
A couple of our team members are making a commitment to be more thoughtful in their buying decisions, focusing on repurposed and recycled products, joining MAYO in our journey to BComing a BCorp. Barrie and Isaiah aim to make more sustainable choices when it comes to their technology and single-use plastic consumption this year, and into the future.
Recycling Technology
Unfortunately, when it comes to recycling electronics, it’s not as simple as tossing old computers, cell phones, and other gadgets into the recycling bin. As a result, many electronics end up in landfills and lead to toxic waste.
With three old cell phones, two laptops and an old TV in her garage, Barrie is well aware of how quickly irrelevant tech can pile up at work, and at home. To reduce toxic electronic waste, Barrie has committed to being more thoughtful about her electronics purchasing and disposal habits by shopping with certified B Corp Go Nimble. The company offers the latest technology in packaging that is 100% plastic-free, made from recycled scrap paper, and contains no harmful inks or dyes. Plus, with each purchase, she’ll receive a free, biodegradable bag, which she can use to recycle all her old tech.
Zero Single-Use Plastics
Single-use plastics are everywhere. From plastic bread bag tags to plastic bottles, plastic straws, plastic packaging, plastic cutlery, and of course–plastic shopping bags–plastic has become a staple in our everyday lives.
According to PlasticOceans.org, 10 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans each year, which is equivalent to a garbage truckload EVERY MINUTE.
Isaiah has been trying to eliminate single-use plastics for a while now, but this year, he hopes to finally get to zero single-use plastics. This is no easy feat, with plastics in nearly everything we buy today, but he’s hopeful he can meet the challenge t as more businesses find ways to minimize or eliminate single-use plastics.
Isaiah did some research on the BCorp directory and found Preserve, a certified B Corp offering stylish, eco-friendly products for both households and the food services industry. They use recycled plastic to create their products, which are also recyclable and are available for purchase online and in thousands of retail and food services locations across the country.
Isaiah has already replaced plastic bags, plastic containers, and plastic shampoo bottles with products from Preserve, getting him closer to achieving his goal.
